Life of a Mermaid

Angels of the Sea

The birth day of a newborn baby mermaid or merman is a big day of celebration down in the depths of the beautiful blimey sea. Trumpets are sounded, hour'd'erves are served, and the mer community gathers round a central ceremonial seaweed bed to sing songs of celebration and welcome the newborn member of their mysteriously hidden magical society into the world. The party, commonly known to the mer-people as the New Life Festival, requires no formal wear or prior invitation- every man, woman and child may attend, regardless of whether or not they have a close relationship with the mer-baby's parents.

Living by the rules of the Mer-Kingdom

Mermaids enjoy a relatively harm-free existence, safe from ferocious sea-predators and the danger that humans present when they invade the sea with their harpoons and fishnets and cameras that scathe the bottoms of the ocean floor. But the only way that they are able to maintain this secretive existence, is if they all act in accordance to the Unification Protection Act issued by their merman king. Their community has boundaries which may only be crossed for one reason, and one reason only. Ever since the ancient Greek Siren mermaids sang sailors peacefully to their watery deaths many moons ago, it has been a mermaid tradition to race to the sea surface when a ship is in danger, to distract the dying wayward seamen from the perils of their tragic life's end. A mermaid cannot interfere with the fates of man, so she cannot attempt to save, nor otherwise protect him, but she can give him a glimpse of hope by simply revealing herself to him in his last moments of breath. The mermaids chime together to sing a hypnotizing lullaby-one that casts a magical enchantment on the fallen sailor, so that he accepts his fate with peace and serenity, and dies with the hope that he will resign to a quiet life lost in the sea, with a beautiful mermaid wife, and will never long to see land again.

If any mer-person were to break the rules of the Unification Protection code of conduct, it would put all mer-people in grave danger. This is why, for centuries, people have claimed that mermaids are not real beings. It is because they are rarely ever sighted-for if they are seen by human eyes, than they have done a grave injustice to all of their fellow kin and kind.

Mermaid fact and fiction

[Keeping in mind of course that 'fact' is a relative term and applies only to those who believe]
FACT: Mermaids are all beautiful. (Salt water helps preserve and perfect the look, feel, and touch of supple mermaid skin and keeps their hair in prime condition as well. Sea weed, in its purest form, is a great exfoliant, as, of course, is sand).

FICTION: Mermaids all wear sea-shell tops. (Many young mermaids do opt for the seasons latest shells when it comes to sporting fashionable sea-wear, but many mermaids are now wrapping strands of eel grass across their chests, as a more comfortable and sometimes, more revealing alternative to seashells.

FACT: Mermaids must be married by their 19th birthday.(The typical lifespan of a mer-person is 50 years, and the average number of children per mer-couple is 13. Whenever the population of a mer-community exceeds 212, a new mer-colony must be established.)
